Our Beasts
“Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.” — Genesis 2:19-20 ESV
Man has encountered many beasts; some natural, some supernatural, and still others of our own imaginations. What can these beasts reveal about Man…in how we react or interact with them?
A natural creature operates on instinct. It responds to physical stimuli. There is no self-actualization. A beast will serve its purpose on earth and fulfill its prime directive. What can these creatures tell us about the more primal desires of Man?
A supernatural creature lives above the physical plane and yet, they do not carry the title “Image Bearer of God”. What makes Man the most treasured creation of God?
As storytellers, Man puts himself in his own stories…even in the role of The Beast. What aspects of humanity are highlighted in the creatures we create?
